Today at West Point, Colonel Charles Young will be posthumously promoted to Brigadier General — making him the first Black General in the Army’s history. I’m grateful for his trailblazing service and for everyone who fought to ensure he receives the recognition he deserves.
Col. Charles Young lived a remarkable life. Born in Kentucky to enslaved parents in 1864, he graduated from West Point and became the highest-ranking Black officer in the military. I’m proud to have supported his posthumous promotion to Brigadier General in honor of his service.
